JH is a 9 yr old boy enrolled in the 4th grade. He has been struggling with reading since the first grade and was reading at a 2nd grade level at the time of his assessment. He doesn’t really like reading and would rather be playing video games.
His parents are well educated and have been seeking help for him from the beginning. The help he received through the school district and tutors has not led to significant gains for him. He loses his place and tires easily while reading. He has difficulty identifying words and often has reading errors such as adding, omitting, substituting, and transposing words. As a result, he is a slow reader and his reading comprehension is not great. Although he never complained about his vision and passed the vision screening at the pediatricians office, his parents were unaware that he was farsighted and would benefit from reading glasses. While reading glasses were necessary to relieve strain on his eyes, it didn’t improve his tracking and word recognition skills.
After enter the Reading Without Limits program for only 4 months he advanced his reading speed from 125 to 286 words per minute with the tracking ability of a freshman in college. His reading comprehension jumped to the high school level.
